Accreditation as basis for notification

One of the cornerstones of EU's internal market is the free movement of services and products. This means that a product that has been tested/certified in accordance with harmonized standards in one Member State must be able to be marketed freely throughout the EU.

Common EU requirements are set out in a wide range of areas, as set out in directives or regulations. EU rules, where there are essential requirements for safety, health or the environment, require that the control of these products is carried out by a notified body.

A notified body shall be designated by the responsible national authority. In many cases, it is a prerequisite for the appointment that the company has an accreditation in the area. Notified bodies may be certification bodies, inspection bodies or testing laboratories.

See the list of notified companies on EU's website Nando. For some schemes, the list of notified bodies is published in other ways, such as the eIDAS regulation.

Application

A company wishing to be notified body must apply to DANAK for accreditation to all or part of the directive or regulation in question. Find application form here.

Select application form: inspection (17020), testing (17025), system certification (17021-1) or product certification (17065). Options can be stated in a regulation/directive or executive order. In addition, DANAK follows EA's rules for which standard can be used in the individual cases, cf. EA-2/17.

The application states which parts of the rules are applied for (which products and methods/modules). For example, the use of specific technical standards as a basis for EU type testing. The possibilities are described in the individual regulations/directives and can be specified in an executive order.

Once accreditation has been obtained, the company can request the responsible authority to be notified within the accredited area.
